Nepal 2019
Day 1_Tuesday

HELLO ALL

Brenda Lee

Morning devotion started at 7am and Yang led us with John 10:27-28 “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” Indeed, the sheep follows the shepherd, hears and know His voice. Jesus is our true shepherd.

After breakfast we walked over to a nearby school for children with learning disabilities. Many of the students came from different places and some even lived in the school. The school facilities were very basic. The school authorities graciously allowed us to use their premises to run a full day of free medical clinic.

The clinic got very busy with a total of 142 patients by the end of the day. Many of them were the children from the school itself. Eleven of us were divided into small teams—into medical triage, doctor and nurse clinic, crowd control, pharmacy and prayer ministry. Though it was the very first time the team worked together, and was only given a five minute briefing before the clinic was open, it turned out so harmonious and smooth. It was a job well done by the team!

Healthcare in Nepal is poorly available and many people do not get the basic care needed. Many of the disabled children’s problems are neglected during their development. The illness destroys quality of life for the kids and puts pressure on the family. Just to share a few accounts, there was a mother who came to the clinic with severe back pain. She said she had been looking after her two disabled grown up children with no equipment support and has been carrying them on her back. Another 12 year old girl said she hasn’t been able to see well for some time because her family couldn’t afford to get her a pair of glasses.

In just one day, the medical problems we have seen, seemed too big for us to deal with. Besides giving out paracetamol, there wasn’t much else we could do. In the Bible, it says Jesus healed the sick, the blind man, the lame and the woman with a bleeding problem. Jesus healed these sick people because He loves them and He cared for them. Jesus addressed people’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. It was then that I saw the medical clinic as a way to show people we love them, to act out Jesus’ command to “love your neighbour “.

For now, it may seem like a drop in the ocean but I pray it has made a difference in their world.

Reviving Dreams Again

On this night, I was assigned to share a few words with the youth. We started off with some time of praise and worship led by Henna. I shared on the book of Joshua on how God led the people into the promised land, to encourage the youth that the Lord could do the same too if they followed Him. The Israelites had to overcome enemies in the land before they were able to walk into their destiny. These enemies were the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, Jebusites and Girgashites. To overcome these enemies, their faith needed to be built up. We too can be encouraged by these verses.

  • Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. (Joshua 1:7)

  • Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8)

  • Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

It didn’t stop there. I went on to talk about the miracle of the parting of the Jordan River, and the miraculous fall of the walls of Jericho. These accounts reminds us to always first draw near to Jesus, as He is the Vine and we are the branches, apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5), and to always call upon Him for he will show us the great and mighty things that we do not know (Jeremiah 33:3).

I believe that through sharing this, the youth were strengthened to draw closer to Jesus and to have their dreams and visions revived once again, and their trust in the Lord rebuilt, knowing nothing is impossible with Him. We ended with a time of prayer for each youth through the laying of hands and prophesying over them.
